Book Challenge: Recommend a series

For #grimdragon, Game of Thrones Withdrawal: Recommend a Book series! Technically this isn’t a book series, but I think it’s still a great series nonetheless! Ms. Marvel is a fantastic comic series, but you can read what’s been released in these collections so far! I wanted to give this comic a try not just because of the rave reviews, but because Kamala Khan sounds like an amazing heroine! Here’s part of the Goodreads summary for Ms. Marvel:.

When Kamala discovers the dangers of her newfound powers, she unlocks a secret behind them, as well. Is Kamala ready to wield these immense new gifts? Or will the weight of the legacy before her be too much to bear? Kamala has no idea, either. But she’s comin’ for you, Jersey!

One of the fantastic parts about this story is Kamala’s struggle with her identity as a Muslim and her new found super hero powers. Kamala wants to rid New Jersey of crime and help others, but she also tries to respect her parents’ expectations and honor her culture. One of my favorite parts is when Kamala tries to figure out a proper super hero costume for herself. She wants to be able to move fast and use her abilities, but Kamala also tries to preserve her sense of modesty at the same time. I love how the artists capture her emotional state so well–agony at deciding what to wear and elation at finding something perfect!

I’ve read the first volume and I’m looking forward to reading more! Anyone else read this? What did you think? If not, it’s worth putting on your TBR!

Tonight there’s a Gemina book signing for Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman, AND Marie Lu! I really want to go! But it’s Monday and it’s that time of day where I’m ready to quit! Fingers crossed I can make it. Otherwise, it’s an early bedtime for me! (I feel SO old! 😩)
