Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman @heyerin is one of my favorite reads this year. It has such strong characters, story, and writing! This is my pick for under-hyped book. Kate Thompson is definitely one of my favorite heroines. She’s tough and although her motive is bent on killing the men who killed her father, I still appreciated her determination and will to do it. And I also love that Kate’s mixed heritage—she’s half white, half Mexican—was an integral part of the story. I also enjoyed the setting—the Old West. I’d never read a YA Western before so this one was such a treat. Erin has always loved Western movies and books and its apparent in how much detail went into the story from the dialogue (the Western dialect gets some getting used to, but I loved it) to the Native American folklore about finding gold in the mountains–I loved it all!.
Don’t let the Western setting scare you away! Once you start reading this, you’ll love it. Here’s the summary from Goodreads:
Revenge is worth its weight in gold.
When her father is murdered for a journal revealing the location of a hidden gold mine, eighteen-year-old Kate Thompson disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers—and justice. What she finds are untrustworthy strangers, endless dust and heat, and a surprising band of allies, among them a young Apache girl and a pair of stubborn brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, a startling truth becomes clear: some men will stop at nothing to get their hands on gold, and Kate’s quest for revenge may prove fatal.
Girl disguised as a boy bent on revenge and can handle guns? YES. PLEASE. You’re welcome!!
