The theme for Week 2 is “Luck” for my book challenge #jennsbookishchallenge and one of the first characters that came to my mind was Kaladin Stormblessed from The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. This is the first book in The Stormlight Archive (there are two so far). You can’t tell from this picture, but this is one of those thick epic fantasies that you immerse yourself in. Kaladin was a squad leader, on his way to rising in the ranks of the military. A tragic event happens to him and his squad where he is the only survivor and now is a slave. He’s bought and sent to work as a bridge runner for Lord Sadeas’s chasm runs for powerful jewel shards. Kaladin is assigned to the crew Bridge 4 known to suffer the most deaths because they run out before the other bridges. Kaladin is full of despair and self loathing, but as he continues to go on bridge runs and survives, his crew begins to look at him as a leader who has uncanny luck for surviving the bridge runs. I know the length is intimidating (over 1000 pages!) but this story and the characters are worth it! I loved Mistborn and was excited to start this series too.
I also included a favorite quote which also counts for the #rockyourhandwriting Day 7 challenge. It’s sloppy because I was writing it in the car, waiting for Costco to open. 😅 But I love this quote! Not only beautifully written, but so fitting as a reminder to be present in whatever you do.
