My March Book Challenge: Week 1 “Traditions” The Grisha

“Traditions” is this week’s theme for my book challenge #jennsbookishchallenge and today’s is the Grisha who have powers that can manipulate the elements, materials, and the body. They join the Second Army and enroll in the Academy at the palace to harness their power and learn about the Small Sciences. The Darkling is the leader of the Grisha, but his power is unique. He controls darkness. Alina Starkov is a mapmaker on her first mission which is to cross the Fold–an area of land enshrouded by darkness and inhabited by the Volcra. They are attacked by the Volcra and when Alina’s childhood friend and crush Mal is cornered by one, Alina protects him by unleashing a hidden power no one has seen for a century. She is taken to the Darkling and questioned about her power. Alina is then sent to the palace and trained to be a Grisha.

My explanation is a little vague on purpose because I didn’t want to give away too much. The Grisha trilogy is by Leigh Bardugo @lbardugo and I have sworn fealty to her Grisha and to Alina. I love the Russian inspired world building and the magic system the Small Sciences. I’ve read the first two in the series and I’m eager to read the third one. And then finally Six of Crows!
