Winter reads for children.

My family is SoCal born and raised, so snow is a concept we experience through books and movies. (We could go to the mountains to experience snow, but I think we’re going to wait until the youngest is older.) These are two books we’ve enjoyed this winter season. The Snowy Day is from my kids’ collection and it is about a little boy Peter who gets suited up to explore his neighborhood after a snowy day. Midnight Snowman is from our library. We thought it was neat that the main character Elizabeth had just read The Snowy Day in class and wished it snowed where she lived, but it never does. (Like here!) Then one night it does snow and everyone in the neighborhood comes out to build a snowman. Elizabeth and the other kids ask their neighbor Peter who is from Maine to help because he’s probably an expert at building snowmen. Talk about having a meta experience! It was totally coincidental that I happened to pick up Midnight Snowman at the library and it happened to be a great companion to The Snowy Day. I recommend both not necessarily together, but definitely as winter reads for children.
